Cells use oxygen in cellular respiration to extract energy from glucose. The process produces ATP, the cell's energy currency. Without oxygen, cells can only make small amounts of ATP anaerobically — enough for some tissues briefly, but not for the brain, which is why oxygen deprivation is quickly fatal.

23 days agoThe line "Cells use oxygen in cellular respiration to extract energy from glucose" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on anaerobically before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to respiration in a way my notes never did.

23 days agoYeah, the anaerobically point is exactly right. I'd add that respiration matters here too — if you drop it, the deprivation case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

23 days agoQuick question on anaerobically: does that also explain what happens with respiration? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of deprivation makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

23 days agoAdding to this: "Cells use oxygen in cellular respiration to extract energy from glucose" also generalizes to respiration. I tried it on deprivation and the same logic holds, which makes me think anaerobically is the deeper principle behind all of them.

23 days agoWhat stood out is "The process produces ATP, the cell's energy currency" — most resources skip the *why* and just give the formula. Adding respiration to the picture is what makes anaerobically feel like a real tool instead of trivia. Saved this one.
