Acids donate protons (
H+H^+
); bases accept them. In water, HCl dissociates into
H+H^+
and
Cl−Cl^-
, while NaOH provides
OH−OH^-
that accepts protons. The pH scale measures
H+H^+
concentration: pH 7 is neutral, lower is acidic, higher is basic.
