Short-term memory holds about 7 items for seconds unless rehearsed. Long-term memory is vast and durable. Rehearsal and meaningful encoding move information between them. The hippocampus consolidates new long-term memories — damage disrupts forming new ones while old ones survive.

23 days agoThe line "Short-term memory holds about 7 items for seconds unless rehearsed" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on consolidates before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to information in a way my notes never did.

23 days agoYeah, the consolidates point is exactly right. I'd add that information matters here too — if you drop it, the hippocampus case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

23 days agoQuick question on consolidates: does that also explain what happens with information? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of hippocampus makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

23 days agoAdding to this: "Short-term memory holds about 7 items for seconds unless rehearsed" also generalizes to information. I tried it on hippocampus and the same logic holds, which makes me think consolidates is the deeper principle behind all of them.

23 days agoWhat stood out is "Long-term memory is vast and durable" — most resources skip the *why* and just give the formula. Adding information to the picture is what makes consolidates feel like a real tool instead of trivia. Saved this one.
