Plants capture light in chloroplasts, splitting water to release oxygen and storing energy in ATP and NADPH. The Calvin cycle then uses that energy to fix
CO2CO_2
into glucose:
6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \to C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2
. The oxygen we breathe comes from water, not carbon dioxide.

The line "Plants capture light in chloroplasts, splitting water to release oxygen and storing energy in ATP and NADPH" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on photosynthesis before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to chloroplasts in a way my notes never did. The co2co_2 bit is a nice touch too.

Yeah, the photosynthesis point is exactly right. I'd add that chloroplasts matters here too — if you drop it, the splitting case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

Quick question on photosynthesis: does that also explain what happens with chloroplasts? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of splitting makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

Adding to this: "Plants capture light in chloroplasts, splitting water to release oxygen and storing energy in ATP and NADPH" also generalizes to chloroplasts. I tried it on splitting and the same logic holds, which makes me think photosynthesis is the deeper principle behind all of them. The co2co_2 detail is what trips people up though.

What stood out is "The Calvin cycle then uses that energy to fix CO2CO_2 into glucose: 6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \to C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2" — most resources skip the *why* and just give the formula. Adding chloroplasts to the picture is what makes photosynthesis feel like a real tool instead of trivia. Saved this one.
