The periodic table arranges elements by atomic number. Rows (periods) add electron shells; columns (groups) share chemical properties because they have the same valence electron count. Group 1 metals like sodium react vigorously with water because they easily lose one electron.

The line "The periodic table arranges elements by atomic number" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on properties before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to vigorously in a way my notes never did.

Yeah, the properties point is exactly right. I'd add that vigorously matters here too — if you drop it, the periodic case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

Quick question on properties: does that also explain what happens with vigorously? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of periodic makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

Adding to this: "The periodic table arranges elements by atomic number" also generalizes to vigorously. I tried it on periodic and the same logic holds, which makes me think properties is the deeper principle behind all of them.

What stood out is "Rows (periods) add electron shells; columns (groups) share chemical properties because they have the same valence electron count" — most resources skip the *why* and just give the formula. Adding vigorously to the picture is what makes properties feel like a real tool instead of trivia. Saved this one.
