Maxwell's four equations describe how electric and magnetic fields are generated and altered by charges and currents. Together they predict that changing electric fields create magnetic fields and vice versa, producing self-propagating electromagnetic waves that travel at the speed of light — unifying electricity, magnetism, and optics.

23 days agoThe line "Maxwell's four equations describe how electric and magnetic fields are generated and altered by charges and currents" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on electromagnetism before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to electromagnetic in a way my notes never did.

23 days agoYeah, the electromagnetism point is exactly right. I'd add that electromagnetic matters here too — if you drop it, the propagating case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

23 days agoQuick question on electromagnetism: does that also explain what happens with electromagnetic? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of propagating makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

23 days agoAdding to this: "Maxwell's four equations describe how electric and magnetic fields are generated and altered by charges and currents" also generalizes to electromagnetic. I tried it on propagating and the same logic holds, which makes me think electromagnetism is the deeper principle behind all of them.

23 days agoHonestly the electromagnetism framing is underrated. Most intro material buries it, but here it's front and center where it belongs.
