Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
ΔU=Q−W\Delta U = Q - W
: the change in internal energy equals heat added minus work done by the system. In an engine, burning fuel adds heat (
QQ
), and the expanding gas does work (
WW
) on the piston, converting thermal energy to mechanical energy.

The line "Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed" is the part that finally made it click for me. I'd been fuzzy on thermodynamics before — seeing it spelled out this way connects it to transformed in a way my notes never did. The δu=q−w\delta u = q - w bit is a nice touch too.

Yeah, the thermodynamics point is exactly right. I'd add that transformed matters here too — if you drop it, the converting case breaks down even though it *looks* optional. Learned that the hard way on a problem set last week.

Quick question on thermodynamics: does that also explain what happens with transformed? My textbook mentions both but never ties them together, and this explanation of converting makes me think they're the same mechanism from two angles.

Adding to this: "Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed" also generalizes to transformed. I tried it on converting and the same logic holds, which makes me think thermodynamics is the deeper principle behind all of them. The δu=q−w\delta u = q - w detail is what trips people up though.

What stood out is "ΔU=Q−W\Delta U = Q - W: the change in internal energy equals heat added minus work done by the system" — most resources skip the *why* and just give the formula. Adding transformed to the picture is what makes thermodynamics feel like a real tool instead of trivia. Saved this one.
