Earth's crust is split into plates floating on the mantle. Where plates collide, mountains form (Himalayas). Where they pull apart, new crust forms (Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Where one slides under another, volcanoes and earthquakes occur (Ring of Fire). Continental drift is just plates in motion.
