The golden ratio
ϕ=(1+5)/2≈1.618\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618
appears when a line is split so the whole to the larger part equals the larger to the smaller. It shows up in nautilus shells, sunflower seeds, and Renaissance art, often because it produces aesthetically pleasing proportions — though its ubiquity is sometimes overstated.
