Why the Sky Is Blue

Sunlight contains all colors. Air molecules scatter shorter wavelengths (blue) more than longer ones (red) — a process called Rayleigh scattering. So blue light bounces around the atmosphere and reaches our eyes from all directions, making the sky appear blue. At sunset, light passes through more atmosphere, leaving mostly red.
