Plants capture light in chloroplasts, splitting water to release oxygen and storing energy in ATP and NADPH. The Calvin cycle then uses that energy to fix
CO2CO_2
into glucose:
6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \to C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2
. The oxygen we breathe comes from water, not carbon dioxide.
