Ionic bonds form when one atom transfers electrons to another, creating charged ions held by electrostatic attraction — like NaCl. Covalent bonds form when atoms share electrons, as in
H2OH_2O
. The difference is electronegativity: large gaps favor ionic, small gaps favor covalent.
