Short-Term vs Long-Term Memory

Short-term memory holds about 7 items for seconds unless rehearsed. Long-term memory is vast and durable. Rehearsal and meaningful encoding move information between them. The hippocampus consolidates new long-term memories — damage disrupts forming new ones while old ones survive.
