Cells extract energy from glucose through cellular respiration. Glycolysis splits glucose into pyruvate in the cytoplasm. The Krebs cycle then processes pyruvate in the mitochondria, releasing
CO2CO_2
and transferring electrons. The electron transport chain uses those electrons to pump protons, and the resulting gradient drives ATP synthase to produce ATP, the cell's energy currency.
